4. President's Message - Justin Sarafin
Thank you once again to Julie Troyer and her service team at Brown Mercedes-Benz in Charlottesville for another successful Tech Session. Brown has been hosting our section’s annual technical event every late winter for years now, but every year Julie somehow ups the ante; this year she invited her Dent Wizard paintless dent removal specialist who demonstrated his trade on an ML while we chatted over coffee and doughnuts. Between the assemblage of Mercedes-Benz-trained technicians and parts experts, knowledgeable service managers, friendly sales staff, and enthusiastic Mercedes-Benz owners, the Tech Session continues to offer something for every MBCA member, no matter their level of technical ability.
I was thrilled to get underneath my newly-acquired 107 chassis SL for the first time since I have owned it. Kevin O’Hara, Master Certified Shop Foreman, helped me identify some issues I have been trying to solve and questions I have been trying to answer: the notorious 107 subframe? In fine shape, no cracks. Chassis/underbody rust? None. Manual transmission shift lever slop? Just needs a full set of nylon bushings. Engine and transmission mounts? They are already ordered. As I have been pondering taking a second job to fund the restoration of my SL, I can now sleep at night knowing that the car is in great overall shape; the car’s essentially clean bill of health from the Tech Session has validated my efforts thus far. Now I just need to order that Timevalve stainless exhaust system to continue the freshening of my car’s mechanicals in time for Spring…
Be sure to join your section for two site visit events that are coming up, both Thomas Jefferson-related. On May 3 we are meeting at Poplar Forest near Lynchburg, Jefferson’s retreat home, for Plantation Community and House tours, followed by a picnic lunch (bring your own, and something to drink, too). On August 30 we have an exclusive evening event that includes an after-hours tour of all three floors of Jefferson’s Monticello, followed by a private dinner for our group at Tastings in downtown Charlottesville. Reserve a spot for the night and make a weekend out of it. Space for this event will be limited, so you are encouraged to register early. More specific details will be forthcoming, but in the meantime, see the information in this newsletter.
Hope to see you at a future event,
Justin Sarafin
