Event Recap: Big Glass Flow and McKenzie Pass

George Larson | Published on 8/24/2025
Two unique lava flows in the Bend area.

One near Paulina Lake that is obsidian (black glass) with hiking trails through it to see the flow and surrounding area. The trails are a little treacherous because the lava is very sharp edged (as in broken glass). Good roads for access.

The second on the McKenzie Pass which is a 50 sq mi flow with a road through the middle of it and interpretive trails showing unusual features of the flow as well as the Dee Wright Observatory structure. Roads are narrow, but reasonable good condition.
